Zinc Hair Treatment

There are various zinc supplements now available in the market. They are usually used to counter zinc deficiencies, but one of the secondary uses of zinc supplement is to fight hair thinning and hair loss. Usually, zinc gluconate at a dose level of 50 or 60 milligrams per day for two weeks is recommended. Other forms of zinc supplements are zinc oxide, zinc chloride and zinc sulfate.

There is only on study done in Vitro with zinc sulphate ,  azelaic acid  and Vitamin B6 the year 1998 by D. STAMATIADIS, MARIE-CLAIRE BULTEAU-PORTOIS AND IRENE MOWSZOWICZ
Laboratoire de Biochimie B, Hopital Necker-Enfants-Malades, Paris, France . Vitamin B6 potentiated the inhibitory effect of zinc, but not of azelaic acid, suggesting that two different mechanisms are involved. When the three substances were added together at very low concentrations which had been shown to be ineffective alone, 90% inhibition of 5 a-reductase activity was obtained. If this inhibition is confirmed in vivo, zinc sulphate combined with azelaic acid could be an effective agent in the treatment of androgen related pathology of human skin.

SAW PALMETTO

(SERENOA REPENS)

Background: Serenoa repens is the medical name for the herb saw palmetto. Some studies have shown that saw palmetto may have the same effect as the drug finasteride in treating benign prostate enlargement diseases. It has been suggested that both hair loss and prostate disease may be related to the hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) which is formed when the enzyme 5-alpha reductase interacts with the male hormone testosterone .

Even when there numerous studies that shows the effectiveness of Serenoa Repens in treaten prostate enlargement diseases , there not any study about it use in androgenetic alopecia and the fact that it is really lower DHT is contradictory , some studies prooves that it inhibit DHT and other that do not .

Recomended dosage : up to 400 mg a day.
